Compositing was in Foundry Nuke and Rendering was in Arnold and Redshift.

For nævis, who was hand-animated in the music video, Giantstep used Unreal Engine’s MetaHuman facial rig, which allowed the team to show a range of facial expressions similar to that of any human.įor the 3D work, they used Autodesk Maya, Maxon Cinema 4D, SideFX Houdini, Adobe Substance Painter, Pixologic ZBrush and Marvelous Designer. Here, the team deployed a cubic voxel-like effect, referencing The Glitch from Wreck-It Ralph. Giantstep combined motion capture and facial capture for the animated dancing avatars that perform alongside the live-action aespa members Karina, Giselle, Winter, and Ningning.

While the mocap data provided a foundation for animating aespa’s general movements, Giantstep’s animation team had to make those movements more lifelike and in sync with the real members of the group – and equally as stylish. Giantstep created the 3D-animated Aespa characters with its proprietary technology pipeline combining photogrammetry, real-time rendering and motion capture. The music video blends these worlds as aespa performs in dynamic and colorful CG environments. The music video surpassed 100 million views in 17 days.Ĭontinuing the fictional lore of the all-girl group and its calling to defeat the villain Black Mamba, Savage tells the story of how Aespa met nævis, an AI character who helps the avatars of aespa appear in the real world.īringing K-pop to the metaverse, aespa creator SM Entertainment conceived that the group would transcend the real and virtual worlds through a variety of live and digital experiences. Giantstep, which develops virtual humans through its R&D division, GX Lab, provided a series of VFX and animation shots for a K-pop music video for the band aespa and its new song “Savage,” which is from the group’s first mini-album.
